Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park Travel Guide

Serengeti National Park, located in northern Tanzania, spans 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles) of stunning savannahs, woodlands, and riverine forests. It's famous for its endless plain and the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrate in search of fresh grasslands and drink water. This UNESCO World Heritage site is also home to the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Best time to Visit

- December to March: This is the calving season. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth on the southern Serengeti plains, attracting predators like lions and cheetahs. The grass is lush, and the scenery is stunning.

- June to October: This is the dry season and peak time for viewing the Great Migration as it moves toward the Grumeti River and later to the Mara River in the north. Wildlife congregates near water sources, and the chance of spotting large predators is high.

- April to May: The rainy season. Though some roads may become difficult to navigate, this is the greenest time of the year, and the park is less crowded. The rains bring dramatic landscapes and plenty of wildlife.

How to Get There?

- By Air: The most convenient way to reach the Serengeti is by flying. Regional flights from Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or Dar es Salaam to one of Serengeti’s airstrips (Seronera, Kogatende, Ndutu) take about 1-2 hours. These airstrips are located near major lodges and camps.

- By Road: Driving from Arusha to the Serengeti takes about 7-8 hours. This route offers scenic views and the opportunity to pass through other famous parks like Ngorongoro Conservation Area and  Lake Manyara National Park. A 4x4 vehicle is essential, especially during the rainy season when roads can become muddy and challenging.

Accommodations

- Luxury Lodges: For a high-end experience, stay at lodges like Singita Grumeti, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, or &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas. These offer world-class amenities, excellent service, and prime locations for game viewing.

- Tented Camps: Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, Asilia Africa’s camps (like Namiri Plains), and Lemala Kuria Hills provide a mix of comfort and closeness to nature. Tented camps often move seasonally to follow the migration, offering front-row seats to wildlife action.

- Budget Campsites: For a more rustic experience, public campsites are available within the park. These are basic but allow you to immerse yourself in the Serengeti wilderness. Be prepared with your camping gear and food supplies.

Activities

-Game Drives: Early morning and late afternoon game drives are the best way to see wildlife. You’ll likely encounter lions lounging in the grass, herds of elephants, and cheetahs sprinting across the plains.

-Guided Walking Safaris: For a closer look at the ecosystem, guided walking safaris allow you to explore the Serengeti on foot, learning about the flora and smaller fauna, such as birds and insects, that are often missed on game drives.

-Cultural Visits: Engage with the Maasai people in nearby villages. Learn about their traditional way of life, from herding cattle to crafting beadwork and performing traditional dances.

-Bird Watching: With over 500 bird species, the Serengeti is a paradise for bird lovers. You might spot everything from colorful lilac-breasted rollers to large ostriches and majestic martial eagles.

Wildlife of Serengeti National Park

- The Big Five: Serengeti is home to all members of the Big Five, though rhinos are rare and typically found in the northern parts. Lions are abundant, and leopards can often be spotted lounging in trees.

- The Great Migration: This natural spectacle involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and numerous gazelles as they move in a circular pattern through the Serengeti and into Kenya's Maasai Mara. The migration is a year-round phenomenon, with different events (calving, river crossings) occurring at different times.

- Predators: Serengeti has one of the highest concentrations of predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. The park is also famous for its lion prides, some of which are the largest in Africa.

Travel Tips

  - Visa: Most travelers will need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania, which can be obtained on arrival at major airports or online through the Tanzania eVisa portal.

  - Vaccinations: Consult with your doctor about necessary vaccinations. Yellow fever is required if you're arriving from an endemic area. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended, as the Serengeti is a high-risk area.

  - Currency: The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted in lodges and for park fees. Credit cards are also accepted in many places, though it’s a good idea to carry some cash for tips and smaller transactions.

  - Park Fees: Entrance fees to Serengeti National Park are around $60 per person per day for international visitors. Additional fees may apply for camping or special activities like hot air ballooning.

  - Packing: Pack light, breathable clothing for the hot days and warm layers for cooler mornings and evenings. Don’t forget essentials like binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and sturdy walking shoes.
